CDCU Interview with Danny Glover

(June 11, 2005 – San Francisco, CA) According to Danny Glover, a successful career in movies has only enhanced his lifelong commitment to promoting community development and social justice. The famed actor, director and producer spoke at the closing session of the National Federation of Community Development Credit Union’s 31st Annual Meeting on Saturday June 11, 2005. His presentation was in a question and answer format with Glover’s close friend and fellow San Franciscan, Felix Justice, conducting the interview and accepting questions from the audience.

Glover is a member of Mission Area FCU, a community development credit union (CDCU) based in the Mission District of San Francisco. Since his days as a student activist at San Francisco State College, Mr. Glover has shared the vision of the CDCU movement and devoted much of his life tophilanthropy and community development. When asked about the prospects of achieving economic justice in America, Glover praised the “unheralded work of CDCUs,” adding that their work “has played a key role in creating a sense of empowerment and self-determination” for low-income people and communities.

CDCUs Show Robust Growth Despite Decline of Small CUs

(June 15, 2005 New York, NY) At its recently concluded 31st Annual Meeting in San Francisco, the Federation released the first of a series of publications analyzing financial trends as of fiscal year-end 2004 for 225 community development credit unions (CDCUs), institutions that promote ownership of assets and savings, and access to affordable credit and financial services to low-income people, often specifically to minority populations and communities.

The new report compares CDCU performance to those of federally insured credit unions (FICUs) and found that in 2004, CDCUs experienced higher growth in assets, loans, shares, and net worth than FICUs in the same period. Particularly, the study found that CDCU membership increased at a significantly higher rate relative to the rest of the credit union industry; an aggregate increase of 8% for CDCUs versus the FICU average of 1.5%.
