Thanks to everyone who joined us in Pittsburgh, for the 35th Annual Conference on Serving the Underserved & 6th Latino Credit Union Conference!
More than 300 representatives of credit unions, government, and asset-building professionals attended the event, which began on June 9 with the 6th Latino Credit Union Conference, co-sponsored by the Federation and the Network of Latino Credit Unions and Professionals (NLCUP), transitioning into the Federation's 36th Annual Conference on Serving the Underserved on June 10. A large delegation from Mexico attended, as did a representative of a credit union in Senegal. Attendees learned first-hand about service to urban markets and rural communities from credit union experts, researchers, policy-makers, and others with decades of experience serving underserved markets.
A special highlight of our conference was an inspiring tour of the magnificent Manchester Craftsmen's Guild and Bidwell Training Center founded by Bill Strickland and a site visit to Hill District Federal Credit Union, a $3.4 million-in-assets CDCU, serving 3,161 members in the largely low-income and minority community of Pittsburgh's Hill District, celebrating 40 years of dedicated service to its community!
Thanks to everyone that made the time to join us despite the difficult economy!

Annie Vamper "Helping Hands" Awards
In 1993, the CDCU movement lost one of its heroes with the passing of Federation Associate Director Annie Wilma Vamper. The Annie Vamper "Helping Hands" Award was created later that year to honor Annie Vamper’s memory. The "Helping Hands" Award celebrates individuals whose unselfish work for the CDCU movement carry-on Annie’s legacy by going above and beyond the call of duty and exemplifying the CDCU values.
This year’s recipients of the “Helping Hands” Awards are:
-
Rebecca “Becky” Anderson, Board of Directors Secretary & Supervisory Committee Chairman at Northwest Baptist FCU (Seattle, WA); and
-
Marcus Bordelon, President/CEO of Appalachian FCU (Berea, KY).
Federation President/CEO Cliff Rosenthal, himself a recipient of one of the first “Helping Hands” Awards in 1993, commented on this year’s winners. “Marcus and Becky have been involved with their respective credit unions for more than 20 years, and their commitment to their institutions and the principles of the credit union movement are truly exemplary,” he said. “Both are extremely deserving of this award, and it is an honor to present them their Vamper Award during our upcoming conference in Pittsburgh!”
Both Anderson and Bordelon will receive their awards at a special ceremony on Friday, June 11, during the Federation’s 36th Annual Conference on Serving the Underserved.
