A New Look at Individual Development Accounts for Credit Unions
(April 15, 2008 – New York, NY) The National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions (Federation) is pleased to announce a special workshop that takes a fresh look at how Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) can benefit credit unions and their members. The workshop will be offered by the federal Assets for Independence (AFI) program, which currently provides IDA matching grants to more than 200 IDA programs across the country, will be held immediately prior to the launch of the 5th Latino Credit Union Conference on June 11, 2008, part of the Federation’s 34th Annual Conference on Serving the Underserved (June 11-14, 2008) in Dallas, Texas.
Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) are matched savings accounts that help low-income individuals acquire a first home, capitalize a small business, or invest in higher education or training. Long known as an effective anti-poverty strategy for low-income individuals and families, IDAs are now gaining recognition as a powerful tool for community development as well. This workshop will highlight some important benefits that IDA programs bring to their communities, and examine how IDA programs can help credit unions build community assets, develop new partnerships, and attract new members.
The workshop will be facilitated by Deirdre Silverman, Director of Community Programs for Alternatives Federal Credit Union in Ithaca, New York, and Terry Ratigan, who coordinates the Federation’s technical assistance for IDA programs across the country.
The workshop is offered free of charge, but registration is required. To register online click here.
