(May 13, 2007 - New York, NY) The National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions (the Federation) and the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) are now accepting applications for the recently created Credit Union Development Corps. The Corps will conduct exchanges between the extensive network of Credit Union Development Educators (known as CUDEs, or more simply as DEs) and the Federation’s network of Community Development Credit Unions (CDCUs), located in low-income communities across the United States.
Says DE Program Director Tom Decker, “This exciting new program provides Development Educators with an opportunity to fulfill the promise of the DE Mission Statement: to promote credit unions’ uniqueness and social responsibility through interactive adult education and peer networking.”
DEs will visit CDCUs for up to two weeks, during which time they will share their expertise with their hosts and have the opportunity to learn how these innovative institutions effectively serve their low-income members. A representative from participating CDCUs will then spend one to two weeks at the DE’s institution learning about their programs and operations.
"We believe that these exchanges will create strong partnerships between the participating institutions--partnerships that will bring together large and small credit unions, foster the cooperative spirit, and create a stronger and more unified credit union movement," Federation Executive Director Cliff Rosenthal says.
Major support for the program is provided by the Ford Foundation and CUNA Mutual Group.
The Credit Union Development Corps is now accepting applications from interested DEs. Applications to participate in the first exchanges of the program are due Friday, June 15th. The program will be coordinated by Tom Decker of NCUF along with Pamela Owens and Pablo DeFilippi of the Federation. Mr. Decker, a CUDE, is the steward of the DE program and both Ms. Owens and Mr. DeFilippi are CUDEs.
The applications for DEs and CDCUs are available at http://www.ncuf.coop and http://www.cdcu.coop respectively.
Interested DEs should contact Tom Decker at email@example.com. CDCUs wishing to participate in this program should contact Pamela Owens at (800) 437-8711, Ext. 215 (firstname.lastname@example.org), or Pablo DeFilippi at ext. 204 (email@example.com).
